Let's Talk Ingredients and the 12 we avoid like the plague in our house...
Let's Talk Ingredients....Why do ingredients matter so much?
People talk about ingredients and chemicals alllll the time right? So what’s the big deal? Let’s get right down to the facts.
Fact: not all chemicals are toxic.
Fact: everything is a chemical.
Fact: even though not all chemicals are toxic, many are.
So... how to we know which chemicals and ingredients to avoid and which are fine!?
Did you know that in 1976, Congress passed the Toxic Substance Control Act which grandfathered in between 63,000 - 100,000 chemicals onto the market? Yep, they sure did. These chemicals were grandfathered in, without any testing, and are simply unregulated. Thousands of them are linked to various different health issues and are toxic. And the vast majority of skincare and beauty products on the market contain my toxic ingredients that have no place going into our bodies.
There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today. Many don't have any safety data. This is particularly true of those used in the skin care and beauty industry. Only about 10% of the 10,000 chemicals commonly found in personal care products have safety data. What's worse is the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics) allows companies to use chemicals known to be extremely harmful (lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates) in the products we put on our bodies and on our kids every single day, day after day.
And because our skin is our largest organ, they do indeed go into our bodies, because our skin is our largest organ and absorbs everything we put on it.
Today, only about 50% of the chemicals on the market have been subject to any chemical testing at all. Under this act, manufacturers are protected by trade secret laws, so that they do not even have to post what ingredients are in their products. If you go look at a bottle of any cosmetic product, you may be surprised to see that they only list a small percentage of the ingredients in the bottle. They may list the ingredient, ‘fragrance’ or ‘parfum’ which is what they put when they don’t want to release their secret scent. But the problem with that is they can sneak any ingredients into that secret formula and not have to share it with consumers. Yikes.
The good news is that the time has never been better to use more natural skincare products!!! And we are going to show how you can snag them on a budget and what they can do for your skin.
Now I have a challenge for you today! Go to your bathroom and grab one skincare or beauty item you’d like to find an alternative for. Check out the ingredients on the back. Know better, do better. We are in this together! Share a photo in the comments of what you find.
